George Orwell volunteered for the militia during the Spanish Civil War. George Orwell joined the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista or POUM. He described that he entered a city for the first time in Barcelona (1936) where the working class was truly in charge. At that time, bullfighting was completely excluded as the best matadors were fascists. In 1937, the purge of the communist groups in Barcelona began, which included both George Orwell and the Belgian engineer George Kopp. George Orwell and his wife were able to escape, but George Kopp disappeared into one of the secret prisons.
