Monumento a Cristóbal Colón - Seville

The Columbus Monument is located on Paseo de Catalina de Ribera, a landscaped path in the Santa Cruz neighborhood.

The garden has existed since the end of the 19th century, but was renovated in 1921. Northwest of it are the Murillo Gardens. It was placed on the World Heritage List in 2002.

The architecture of the monument was designed by Juan Talavera y Heredia and the sculpture by Lorenzo Coullaut Valera. It was founded in 1921.

It consists of a base and two stone columns. In the middle of the columns are two arches of a caravel . Along with the arches there are two cartouches , one on each side, with the names of Isabella and Ferdinand respectively . Both the arches and the two cartouches are made of bronze . On the base of the two columns are two marble medallions , one on each side, with the bust of Columbus and the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs respectively. At the top is a lion with an orb. The total height is 23 m. The entire monument is located above the round basin of a fountain.

The monument was designed in honor of Columbus for the 1929 World Exhibition. However, the Sevillians apologize for the large lion on top of the pillars instead of Columbus.
