The monolithic church of Saint-Émilion is completely carved into the limestone rock underground; it has a height that resembles a buried cathedral. It is the largest in Europe by its dimensions. This church is the result of the expansion of caves. It is said that the monks who excavated it reached as many as fifty-five at times. The interior surprises both for the breadth of the naves, carved into the stone, and for the perfectly regular cuts of the arches and quadrangular pillars. A low relief at the back of the central nave represents two guardian angels at the gates of Paradise.
