Watten is located at the mouth of the Kolme in the Aa. Until the 5th and 6th centuries, the Aa valley was a vast marsh, which was only narrow enough at the Watenberg to be crossed. In this strait was the vanguard of the Roman road from Kassel to Boulogne, which gave its name to the place, vasières, from which Watten is derived. Diederik of Alsace is buried at the Watten abbey in 1168.
The town itself has only been able to preserve the tower of St. Gilles' church from its long history. At the top of the hill overlooking Waten stands the ancient limestone celebration tower of the abbey church, built in the 14th century. On one of the earthen bastions of the old fort and facing Waten stands the Bergmolen, built in 1731.
