Norwich Cathedral
1096-1145
Founded by the first Bishop of Norwich, Herbert de Losinga, Norwich Cathedral is one of the most complete major Romanesque buildings in Europe. Like Norwich Castle, the Cathedral's awe-inspiring scale signified the power and permanence of the Norman invaders.
Some of the original Norman wall painting survives in the Jesus Chapel and the presbytery. Norwich Cathedral has the second tallest spire (96 metres) and largest monastic cloisters in England, as well as a unique and world-renowned collection of medieval roof carvings.
The work of today's cathedral community remains grounded in the principles of its Benedictine founders - worship, hospitality and learning. As well as holding traditional services, the cathedral is the venue for lectures, concerts and exhibitions.
Opened in 2009, the new Hostry Visitor & Education Centre, built within the footprint of the medieval Hostry, provides a meeting place where people of all ages and backgrounds are made welcome and where learning and discovery enhance a visit to Norwich Cathedral.
