According to tradition, Voidokilia is often identified with the “sandy Pylos” of Homer, where Telemachus, son of Odysseus, arrives by ship to consult the wise King Nestor during his search for his missing father.
So Telemachus comes to Nestor to ask for information and advice about the fate and whereabouts of Odysseus: he hopes that Nestor can tell him whether his father is still alive, where he was last seen, and how he might be found.
In the Odyssey, Nestor tells Telemachus that he last saw Odysseus at the ships in Troy, and that he separated from him after the fall of the city. Nestor doesn't know what happened to Odysseus afterward and therefore can't tell Telemachus where his father is now.
Nestor confirms, however, that Odysseus was an exceptionally brave and shrewd leader, and he advises Telemachus to continue his quest by going to Sparta and asking King Menelaus for more information. Telemachus then departs with these partial answers and new advice, but without certainty about his father's fate.
