Palazzo Vecchio was also a center of mapping in the 16th century. Cosimo I, Duke of Tuscany set up his great cosmographical project is the Guardaroba of the Palazzo Vecchio. He attracted friar Ingnazio Danti who would paint here 30 maps of the regions of the newly discovered world. Ignazio Danti would base his maps on the published maps of the Flemish cartographers Abraham Ortelius and Gerardus Mercator, and the Italian cartographer Giacomo Gastaldi.
Ignazio Danti created also a large terrestrial globe, known as "the globe of the Guardaroba". He also made a few brass scientific instruments which you can see in the Museo Di Storia Della Scienza nearby.
