It was founded by Federico Borromeo in 1618 inside the Ambrosian Library, which was established a few years earlier, in 1609. The institution was created to provide free cultural education to anyone with artistic or intellectual qualities. Indeed, at the Pinacoteca, starting in 1621, an academy of painting and sculpture was associated, featuring plaster casts of the Laocoön and the Pietà by Michelangelo Buonarroti from the collection of Leone Leoni. The first painting master was Giovanni Battista Crespi, known as il Cerano.
