This nickname was given to the A12 motorway here in the region due to the fact that the occupying forces wanted to build this road further towards Germany in the early years of the 2nd World War. The stretch from The Hague to Oudenrijn was already finished before the war. The idea of the local residents was that the occupying forces were already working on creating a quick escape route 'Heim ins Reich' and could thus choose the 'hare path' in case necessary. Incidentally, not much came of it at the time. The stretch from Oudenrijn to Bunnik was opened during the war years. After the war, Rijkswaterstaat was able to finish the road here on the constructed earthworks. It was not until 1965 that this motorway was connected to the German motorway network.
