General De Bonskazerne

The General Bonskazerne is a former army barracks in Grave. Named after Andreas de Bons who played an important role in the defense of the city of Grave against the French in 1794. The barracks is a national monument. Grave was traditionally a garrison town and wanted soldiers on its territory again. On March 29, 1938, units of the fifteenth infantry regiment were provisionally stationed in the center of Grave until the first alloy building of the barracks was completed in February 1939. In June/July 1938 the construction of this barracks started, just south of Grave in Velp on the Kouwenoords Veld, because the Municipality of Grave itself did not have the space for it. The barracks were designed by Captain of Engineers A.G. Boost. Other so-called Boost barracks are for example: Elias Beeckman barracks, Colonel Palm barracks, Detmerskazerne, Willem George Frederikkazerne and Ernst Casimir barracks. The barracks occupied six alloy buildings because it had to house two battalions of infantry and regimental staff. The complete General De Bonskazerne would be completed in the autumn of 1939.
