Trench of Death

You can find the last piece of the Belgian front from The Great War alongside the IJzer in Diksmuide. The Trench of Death is a trench system where Belgian troops held out for four years against the enemy, hidden behind the Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide railway embankment. Here, the Belgian frontline and that of the enemy were closest (up to 50 meters from each other). Elsewhere, the flood land was broader and the confrontations were less direct. Throughout the war, both sides tried to break through. On the other side of the IJzer the Germans were barricaded in the flour mills in shot-up Diksmuide. Here were petrol tanks. There was intense combat in November 1917.

The visitor’s centre shows the life and suffering of frontline soldiers during the First World War.
