Strijpen is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a part of the city of Zottegem. The village center is located just west of the city center of Zottegem and is connected to it by buildings. Strijpen is located in the Zwalm region. Strijpen was already inhabited in the early Middle Ages. Merovingian cemeteries from the sixth and seventh centuries were uncovered on Beugelstraat. The name Strijpen comes from the Old Dutch 'Stripa', which means 'strip of land'. In 1162, bishop Nicolaus of Cambrai made the solemn transfer of the property and income of the church of Strijpen to abbot Gillebertus. From the 12th century until the French period in Belgium, the patronage of the parish thus came into the hands of the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Martin, which founded a priory there, which disappeared in the religious turmoil in the sixteenth century.
