"The collections of archaeology and decorative arts illustrate our rich regional history, from prehistory to the present day. From traces of earliest man to those of the Merovingians, by way of major evidence of the Gallo-Roman period, you can see the archaeological wealth of the Liège region and its early position of crossroads in the heart of Europe. You will find masterpieces of Mosan mediaeval art (wood carvings, and carvings in stone and ivory, manuscripts, enamel work, etc.) The best known works are the "Virgin of Dom Rupert", the "Mystery of Apollo" and the "Gospel-book of Notger". The museum also houses a rich collection of gold- and silverware, a large collection of ceramics (earthenware faience and porcelain), a coin cabinet (numismatics), and many decorative art objects: tin, copper, cast iron, wrought iron, furniture, tapestries, fireplaces, stained-glass windows, jewellery, fabrics, carved stones, chandeliers, paintings, and so on. This masterpiece of Mosan architecture, listed in Wallonia's major heritage register, was built between 1597 and 1605, for Jean de Corte, known as Curtius, a wealthy industrial merchant and warehouseman for the Spanish armies. The building is currently undergoing restoration work."
