Fort Tienhoven

The island on which Fort Tienhoven is located is a protected nature reserve and has been in the hands of Staatsbosbeheer since 1964. For decades, the fort was not maintained, giving nature free rein. Animals such as the tawny owl, buzzard, grass snake and various species of bats have found their place here. Since 2008, staatsbosbeheer has been pursuing a more active policy and, for example, mowing, which means that it is hoped that the nutrient-poor vegetation that once stood there will return. Unfortunately, the island is closed to visitors. Especially for security reasons, because the fortress is a real ruin with danger of collapse.
