Der Kanal Roeselare - Leie war zu Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts die Schlagader der örtlichen Industrie. Die Industrie hatte unter der Besatzung schwer zu leiden. Die Deutschen requirierten viele Maschinen und Material und zahlreiche Unternehmen wurden durch Bombenangriffe zerstört. Dennoch herrschte während der Besatzungszeit stets viel Betrieb. Immerhin war der Kanal voll und ganz Bestandteil der Kriegswirtschaft.
