This monastery of the 16th century has a huge atrium, used in early colonial times for mass catholic celebrations. Because of a visit by pope John-Paul in 1992, together with the center of the village, the building was painted in bright yellow and white colours that contrast wonderfully with the blue sky. The monastery was constructed on a huge maya platform, to replace its function as a pelgrimage site. Some of the old piramids have not been totally destroyed, and you can spot them from the back entrance to the altarpiece, where a miraculous virgin has been placed.
