Die Emme entspringt im Gebiet zwischen Hohgant und Augstmatthorn im Kanton Bern direkt an der Grenze zum Kanton Luzern. Die 82 km lange Emme durchfliesst und ist namengebend für das Emmental und mündet im sogenannten Emmenspitz unterhalb von Solothurn in die Aare.
Das Einzugsgebiet der Emme ist 983 km² gross. Die mittlere Wasserführung ist bei der Mündung rund 20 m³/s. Die maximale Wasserführung beträgt bis über 650 m³/s
