Did you know that donkeys are still kept in Josaphat Park because Schaerbeek is known as 'the donkey commune'? In the past, the people of Schaerbeek cultivated 'cherry trees' or 'itchy ears'. While cherries are sweet, cherries have a rather sour taste. The people of Schaerbeek had the privilege of bringing their fruit on donkeys to the Brussels market to sell it to the cherry lambic brewers. When the cherry sellers arrived, the people of Brussels shouted: "Hey! Doë zên die êzels van Schoerebeik!" (Hey, there are those donkeys from Schaerbeek!). At one point, there were as many donkeys as people living in Schaerbeek.
