The chapel is located in the French department of Yonne, in the commune of Vézelay on the northern slope of the hill of Vézelay.
The chapel was built in 1146-1170 after St. Bernard's preaching for the Second Crusade in remembrance of this event. It was consecrated in 1152. It is dedicated to the Holy Cross, but it is nicknamed the Cordelle in reference to the cord of the Franciscan monks. Saint Louis visited it several times, notably in 1248 and 1267, when he came to venerate the relics of Mary Magdalene in the basilica of Vézelay.
