Het ligt ten noordoosten van de stad Franeker, tussen Schalsum en Slappeterp. Aan de zuidelijke grens loopt de A31 en de noordelijke grens de Oudemeer. Door het dorpsgebied stromen ook de Schalsumervaart en de Oudevaart .Peins is ontstaan op een oude terp, al voor de 12e eeuw zou er sprake zijn van een kerk. De huidige kerk, de Sint-Gertrudiskerk dateert uit de 14e eeuw
