The Kao Laem Dam was constructed in 1985, flooding the entire area from a little beyond Ban Ongthi to just before Sangkhlaburi. The railway course became submerged under the waters of the Kao Laem reservoir. There had been caves enlarged along the hillsides into which trains could enter to escape the increasingly frequent allied bombing. In 1974, in one of such caves, a group of Australians, located the abandoned Japanese C56 steam locomotive now displayed near the Tha Makham bridge.
