In Delfzijl steht ein Denkmal zu Ehren des belgischen Schriftstellers Georges Simenon. Das Denkmal stellt nicht ihn dar, sondern eine Figur, die er während seines Urlaubs hier erfunden hat: Kommissar Maigret. Maigret wurde nicht nur an diesem Ort erfunden, sondern er ist auch an diesem Ort im Buch "Maigret in Holland" aktiv, wo er einem französischen Gelehrten zur Seite steht, der des Mordes an einem Lehrer namens Koen Poppinga verdächtigt wird.
