Carlos de Lorena nació en 1712 en Lunéville, cerca de Nancy. Fue el hermano de Francisco de Lorena y, como tal, el cuñado de María Teresa de Austria. Se convirtió en gobernante de los Países Bajos del Sur. Era muy querido por el pueblo y tuvo dos estatuas: una de ellas estaba en el gablete de la "Brouwershuis" en la Grote Markt de Bruselas. La segunda estaba en el Koningsplein. Según el autor Michael Baigent, también fue el jefe del Prieuré de Sion, aunque la organización de ese grupo es muy disputada por los académicos.
