In June 1965, Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II appointed the four Beatles Members of the Order of the British Empire, MBE. The Beatles received their MBEs at Buckingham Palace. The band members were nominated by Prime Minister Harold Wilson (who also was the M.P. for Huyton, Liverpool). The appointment - at that time primarily bestowed upon military veterans and civic leaders - sparked some conservative MBE recipients to return their insignia in protest (source: Wikipedia)
