Volgens een verhaal uit de middeleeuwen werd in de buurt van de Heilig Kruiskapel ooit een kruis gevonden door een herder, die het aan de kerk van Gooik schonk. Daar verdween het kruis echter stante pede, en het werd weer teruggevonden op de oorspronkelijke vindplaats. Dat was een goede reden om in dit gebied, dat toen nog afgelegen was, een kapel te bouwen voor het heilige kruis.
