De boog volgt de Oude Schelde, nauwelijks 200 m verderop aan je rechterhand. De Oude Schelde is 6 km lang en beslaat met de aanpalende beemden een 115 ha groot gebied met een rijke fauna en flora.
Oorspronkelijk volgde de Schelde deze stroomgeul naar de samenvloeiing met de Durme in Temse. Na een overstroming in 1240 baande ze zich echter een meer westelijke weg.
De Nieuwe Schelde werd breder, terwijl de Oude Scheldearm aan kracht inboette. Uiteindelijk verzandden beide uiteinden en ontstond een verlaten arm, die nu een paradijs is voor vissers, die er tientallen vissershutten hebben neergepoot.
