Every year, the Russians here commemorate their dead who fought in World War I. They died here by the thousands. The Tsar of Russia offered his manpower in exchange for armament from the French. In the area, you can still find quite a few descendants with a Russian name. The Russian soldiers were among the first to start mutinying due to the abuses during World War I.
It was also in Mourmelon a few years earlier, on November 20, 1909, that the Dutchman Gijs Küller became the first Dutchman to make a motorized flight.
