Die Panathenäen, das wichtigste Stadtfest von Athen, hatten ein Fackelrennen, das am Altar des Prometheus begann und beim heiligen Feuer auf der Akropolis endete, wo Athena verehrt wurde. Durch diese rituelle Verbindung zwischen dem Feuer des Prometheus und dem Altar der Athena auf der Akropolis ist die Akropolis selbst auch ein Ort mit einer starken, wenn auch indirekten, Verbindung zu Prometheus.
Das Fackelrennen der Panathenäen fand am sechsten Tag des Festes statt, innerhalb des mehrtägigen Programms der Panathenäen. Die Panathenäen selbst endeten stets am 28. Tag des Monats Hekatombaion (ungefähr Ende Juli), und in der großen vierjährigen Ausgabe fand das Fackelrennen also in diesem gleichen Zeitraum statt, vor dem Umzug und dem Opfer auf der Akropolis.
