Grote paniek in het kleine havenstadje Den Briel op die 1ste april 1572. ''s Middags, zo rond twee uur, bleken er in de monding van de Maas zesentwintig schepen te liggen. Het waren de Watergeuzen! Kapers, ruw volk. Prins Willem van Oranje had deze lieden - die zich overigens niet veel aan hem gelegen lieten liggen - kaperbrieven gegeven. Daarmee waren ze volgens hem officieel gerechtigd strijd te voeren tegen de hertog van Alva en diens Spaanse bewind.
