El Vondelpark es el parque urbano más conocido de los Países Bajos. Al año, aquí vienen aproximadamente tantos visitantes como habitantes tiene Bélgica. Especialmente en el Día de la Reina, este parque vale la pena visitar, sobre todo para los niños, ya que se pueden jugar juegos ideados y creados por otros niños y comprar numerosos juguetes antiguos.
En los años 60 del siglo pasado se construyeron los actuales parques infantiles y en los años 80 el teatro al aire libre.
En 1996, el Vondelpark fue reconocido como monumento nacional.
El Vondelpark fue diseñado en estilo paisajístico inglés. Actualmente tiene una extensión de 45 hectáreas. En 1953, la Asociación para la creación de un parque para pasear y montar a caballo transfirió la propiedad del Vondelpark al municipio de Ámsterdam, por razones financieras.
