Il territorio comunale è posizionato tra il basso corso dell'Aterno-Sagittario a nord-ovest, la Valle Peligna a sud e il massiccio della Maiella a sud-est. All'interno del comune rientrano le Gole di Popoli, che raccordano la bassa valle dell'Aterno in provincia dell'Aquila con la Val Pescara in provincia di Pescara, attraversate dalla Strada statale 17 dell'Appennino Abruzzese ed Appulo-Sannitico. A partire dal territorio di Popoli il fiume Aterno-Sagittario prende il nome di Aterno-Pescara o solamente Pescara.
