Il comune di Hanstedt si trova con le sue diverse frazioni al margine settentrionale ed orientale dell'area protetta della Lüneburger Heide. Le frazioni situate a est sono completamente o quasi completamente circondate dall'area di protezione paesaggistica del bosco di Garlstorfer e dell'area circostante. Hanstedt è anche il centro amministrativo della comunità amministrativa di Hanstedt con i comuni associati di Asendorf, Brackel, Egestorf, Hanstedt, Marxen e Undeloh.
A causa del numero di abitanti, il consiglio comunale di Hanstedt è dotato di 17 seggi, secondo il NKomVG.
Tuttavia, il consiglio comunale di Hanstedt ha iniziato nel 2011 con soli 15 membri, poiché né il SPD né i Verdi sono riusciti a coprire i seggi disponibili dalle liste. Poco dopo l'inizio della legislatura, è deceduto inaspettatamente il candidato indipendente Riebesehl, così che nel 2013 e anni seguenti solo 14 membri del consiglio hanno guidato le sorti del comune.
