Vermoed wordt dat de naam Kozen afstamt van een Latijnse persoonsnaam zoals Cusinius. In ieder geval was er al in 1218 sprake van een plaatsje Chosen. Tot op het einde van de 18de eeuw stond Kozen onder het gezag van het kasteel van Wijer.
