Slough was the place where the famous German astronomer William Herschel was active. The even more famous scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt came to assist him with his research when he visited his brother in London. Herschel began his career as a musician and composer, in which he was quite successful. He has a considerable number of symphonies to his name. In his free time, he studied mathematics and astronomy, a passion he shared with his sister Caroline Herschel, who also came to England in 1772. Herschel also built a huge telescope with a focal length of 12 meters by himself, at that time the largest in the world. He is known as the discoverer of the fact that the sun is part of the Milky Way, a flat disk of stars. He also discovered the planet Uranus on March 13, 1781. In the same year, he received the Copley Medal.
