Op het Hembrugterrein, een voormalig industriëel en militair domein (ong. 45 hectare) bevonden zich onder andere de Artillerie Inrichtingen. Het complex ligt in het hart van de Stelling van Amsterdam. De Stelling van Amsterdam was een kringstelling van permanente verdedigingsbouw rond de hoofdstad en werd aangelegd tussen 1880 en 1920 door het toenmalige Departement van Oorlog. Binnen de Stelling van Amsterdam was bevoorrading van alle benodigde voeding en goederen van groot belang. Dit was uiteraard ook het geval voor wapens en munitie.
Op dit moment wordt het Hembrugterrein herbestemd. Het hoofdkwartier van de HollandRoute-organisatie zal gevestigd worden in een van de monumentale gebouwen.
