Op dinsdag 4 augustus 1914 stonden vele inwoners van het Zuid-Limburgse dorp Mesch in spanning te kijken op de Mescherberg. In de verte trokken Duitse militaire colonnes voorbij. De weg waarover zij reden, ligt precies op de grens tussen Nederland en België. Zouden de Duitsers niet toch door Nederlands Limburg trekken? Dan zou Nederland ook in oorlog komen.
