This house, a unique example of early colonial civil architecture with medieval and renaissance influences, was built by the Montejo family, three members of which participated in the conquest of the Yucatan Peninsula. In the 1540s they finally managed to stabilise the region and to found its capital Merida, after facing many Maya revolts. They took revenge for the suffering in the battles in the decoration of the main entrance: spanish soldiers crush barbarian maya heads under their feet.
