These are the ruins of a prosperous city in the 7 and 8th century, controlling the river transport of trade goods. They are surrounded by a nature reserve with howler monkeys and vibrant birdlife. It is the only major site in Mexico that cannot be reached by car; a one hour boat ride is obligatory.
