Sifnos is well known all over Greece for its long tradition in pottery and its naturally occurring flameproof clay. To make their pottery, Sifnians exploited the abundant high quality argil deposits, the running water from springs, and the lentisk, used as carburant.
Sifnos is characterised by hills and small fertile valleys verdant with olive trees, vines and grain inland and a steep coastline. In the centre of the island the highest peak, Prophetes Helias, imposes at an altitude of 678 metres.

The islands landscape of Sifnos is mainly influenced by the two main underlying rocktypes (lithology): limestone and metamorphic green-schists/blueschists.
Sifnos was a weatlhy island due to its gold and silver mines and ores. The island was so wealthy that they built the famous Treasure of Sifnos in Delphi in the 6th century BC.

Between 800-500 B.C, Sifnos experienced a rapid economic development due to mining. Sifnian currency came into circulation for the first time, manufactured in local mint. It was also the period when the original fortifications were established, and the agora, temples, watchtowers, and so-called “optical telegraphs” to the defend of the precious metals mines were built.
