Wat we vandaag als de plek Schiphol kennen is in de loop der eeuwen enkele kilometers verschoven. 't Schipholl wordt voor het eerst in 1447 genoemd. De betekenis van Schipholl is een laaggelegen land waar takken worden gesneden. "Scip" is afgesneden tak. 't Schipholl bestond en bestaat uit de meertjes de Kleine Poel, het gebied rondom het Zwarte Pad, het oeverlandenreservaat en het poldertje van Sloothaak met de voormalige stadskwekerij.
