Op deze hoogte van de Kapittelbeek tref je een grijsgroene kleilaag aan uit het Onder-Ieperiaan, ook gekend als de Formatie van Kortrijk. Daar boven, wat je kan zien als je de valleiwand opklimt dagzomen de tertiaire lagen van een fijn kleiig zand uit het Boven-Ieperiaan. De meer zandige laag bewaart het water als een spons en de kleilaag daar onder zorgt ervoor dat het niet dieper weg vloeit. Daar waar de vallei ingesneden is tref je zoals hier dan ook dikwijls bronnen aan.
