In Horse Guards Road, the Cabinet War Rooms are located in the basements of the Treasury. During World War II, the cabinet met in these bomb-proof spaces, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill had his headquarters here until May 8, 1945. The decor and the many maps on the walls date from the last days of the war. Since the end of 2004, the Cabinet War Rooms have also included a museum about the life and work of Winston Churchill. The great Prime Minister was a fierce opponent of Hitler from 1933, but he stood alone within his party with that view. It was only when the appeasement policy of his predecessor proved ineffective that Churchill was appointed Prime Minister. Thanks to his unyielding and hard stance, the Nazis lost World War II.
