Le Jordaan est connu comme le quartier le plus authentique d'Amsterdam. Le nom a plusieurs explications. L'une d'elles est qu'il s'agirait d'une déformation du mot français "jardin" qui signifie jardin. Une autre explication fait référence au mot Jordicitie, une juridiction ou zone de droit. Une troisième explication est qu'il fait référence à la maison De Jordaan sur la Lindengracht.
