The Notre Dames de Brebières or Basilica of the Golden Virgin is very well known by the British and for its legend of the Golden Virgin. In 1915, the church was hit by shell-fire during Wold War I. The statue of the Virgin and child at the top was left leaning almost horizontally but it did not fall. The soldiers said that if the statue would fall, it would mark the end of the war, be it defeat or victory. It didn't crash for several years until 1918, a few months before the end of the war.
