HiptriptipA route in the spotlight |
The route we like to bring in the spotlight is the motorroute ' Rondje Schellebelle' or a tour of Schellebelle, Belgium. The name of the village is argument enough to try out this tour. We made this route together with the organisation Motoren en Toerisme. But besides 'Schellebelle' also the following places are visited during the motortrip: the gigantic square of Sint-Lievens-Houtem, (see picture right) known for its unique 'Yearly Market'; the Roman-historical Velzeke-Ruddershove where also the founder of RouteYou lives, the watermill 'Boembekemolen' that took part in the contest for monuments of the Flemish television 'Monumentenstrijd'; and the brewery De Graal in Nederbrakel. |
FarosRouteYou-ers in the spotlight |
The group De Bosklappers Iepers were very active last month: They created 6 cycling tours and announced 5 events. More than reason enough to put them in the spotlight. We want to give special mention to the group groep van 'Harry' providing a great tour in the Netherlands. |

Pytheas's ChoiceGlobespot of the month |
Set-up
Every month, we ask somebody here to be a modern Pytheas and tell us something about the most amazing place they have experienced, and explain why this is!
Globespot of the month: Siberia, Altai, The Yustid Valley
This month, we go a long way to find the Choice of Pytheas. The Pytheas of the month is Geographer/Topographer Benjamin Van Bever (see furher). Altai is located in Mid-Russia, near the border with China, Kachastan and Mongolia. De capital of the Altai, having only two parallel streets, is NovosibirskGorno-Altaisk.The Pytheas spot of the month is the Yustid Valley. Benjamin Van Bever worked as a last year student in this area, to make his dissertation in topography: 'The area is full of ritual tombs, some more than 2000 years old. What's very peculiar is that all tombs are oriented north-south. Due to the global warming, the permafrost is defrosting. As a result, well-preserved 'tissue' inside the tombs is defrosting too. As well the department of Archeology, Geography and Topography of the University of Ghent are in a bit of a hurry to put all this information on the map. Besides the unique archeological phenomena, the landscape of this place itself is unique. It's a bit hard to get there, though! '

Pytheas of the month: Benjamin Van Bever
Benjamin Van Bever has a Master in Geography/Topography. After his trip to the Altai, he started to work as a GIS expert in RouteYou , where he became responsible for spatial data-engineering. Most of the routes you find here and the network created behind the routeplanner, have passed through his hands and his intelligent geomatica-manipulations.
