De vestingstad van Limbourg werd in de 11de eeuw gebouwd op een rotsuitloper die omringd wordt door een meander van de Vesdre.
Als strategische plaats was Limbourg erg interessant voor de oorlogvoerende mogendheden van West-Europa.
De stad wordt in 1675 ingenomen door Lodewijk XIV en ontmanteld alvorens ze in Spaanse handen te geven.
In 1701 wordt ze opnieuw versterkt door Lodewijk XIV tijdens de Spaanse Successieoorlog.
In 1703 wordt ze echter ingenomen door de hertog van Marlborough.
De dan Oostenrijkse vesting wordt in 1781 militair gedeclasseerd door keizer Jozef II, waardoor talrijke militaire vestigingen verdwijnen, maar tegelijkertijd een prachtig architecturaal geheel wordt bewaard.
