De Explosie van Halifax vond plaats op donderdag 6 december 1917. Op die dag werd de stad Halifax op Nova Scotia in Canada verwoest door de ontploffing van de SS Mont Blanc. Dit Franse vrachtschip was eerder door een misverstand in aanvaring gekomen met het Noorse vrachtschip SS Imo in "The Narrows", een smal gedeelte van de haven van Halifax. De explosie veroorzaakte een schokgolf en een tsunami. Daardoor en onder andere door brand, vallend puin, ingestorte gebouwen en woningen werden ongeveer 2000 personen gedood. Naar schatting 9000 mensen zijn gewond geraakt. Het is nog steeds de grootste door de mens veroorzaakte niet-nucleaire explosie. Ten tijde van het ongeval was de Mont Blanc gecharterd door de Franse regering en had een lading explosieve materialen aan boord voor het Franse leger. De ongeladen Imo was gecharterd door de Commissie voor de Hulp aan België en zou voedsel aan boord nemen voor België.
