Not recommended to do on a very hot day. Take enough water! It is recommended o be at the kastor near sunset. Take a swim before at the rocky shore of Kastro. Don't miss a great evening in the center of Apollonia!

Pigeon towers were very popular on the Aegean islands and also on Sifnos. Pigeons were held here for the manure they produced. Additionally the birds were also an excellent source of protein. In addition, the pigeon towers are a beautiful piece of architecture. Unfortunately there are not that many to see any more on the island.

The farmers have reshaped the hillsides in terrasses over centuries on Sifnos. Only the last decades, the maintenace of these terrasses have been declining, because of another, more fruitful crop to harvest on the island: tourism. My rough estimate is that there are above 500 km of terraswalls on the island. This holds for more than 250 000 m**3 (cubic meters) of rocks which have been repositioned by the farmers of Sifnos to create this landscape. This is comparable with the volume of a smallsize Egyptian pyramid.

Kastro
The town of Kastro has a great set of narrow steep streets. Kastro is an open museum with 4000 years of history. The exterior walls of the medieval houses adjoined and formed the defensive wall with only exits and entries through five vaulted porches. Typical features of the settlement are the closeness and the lack of communal spaces and courtyards, which along with the need for defence led to the construction of houses with two and three floors. Small houses of one room and narrow façade are built in the exterior ring, while big mansions in the interior.
