Near Borrowdale, a huge deposit of the rock graphite was found, probably around the 15th-16th century near the hamlet Seathwaite, belonging to the Borrowdale parish.

Graphite is a soft mineral derived from the Greek "graphein", meaining to "write". It has been used for writing c-snce centuries and you also might know it as a substance of the "lead" in your pencil.

The locals used it to mark sheep. But quickly it was picked up to be used for the pencil industry in nearby Keswick.

What's more peculiar that this is the only deposit of graphite ever found in this solid form.

Did you know that Keswick was the center of the pencil industry! During the 16th century, small scale mining took place in Keswick, and it was the source of the world's first graphite pencils. The pencil industry continued in the town until 2008, when the company moved to Workington on the Irish Sea coast.
