Das Woolworth Building am Broadway in Manhattan, New York City wurde zwischen 1910 und 1913 erbaut. Der Bau kostete seinen Eigentümer Frank Winfield Woolworth 13,5 Millionen US-Dollar, die er in bar bezahlte. Mit 241 Metern war es bis zur Fertigstellung des Bank of Manhattan Buildings an der Wall Street im Jahre 1930 das höchste Gebäude der Welt.
Bei der Einweihung des Gebäudes am 24. April 1913 galt es als achtes Weltwunder. Frank Winfield Woolworth hatte zu diesem feierlichen Anlass 800 Gäste geladen. Im Verlauf der Feier setzte Präsident Woodrow Wilson vom Weißen Haus in Washington aus über eine Fernleitung die Beleuchtung des Gebäudes in Gang.
